There is a wide variety of winter training available throughout the IOCA regional training, the RYA and a number of clubs. The dates for all of the training are in the IOCA South calendar.
IOCA Regional Training
IOCA South Pre-Zone Training (Spinnaker)
This training runs on 6 Saturdays at Spinnaker Sailing Club, Ringwood, and is ideal for sailors who are doing winter training for the first time. As a practical minimum children taking part must have their own boat and be able to comfortably sail a triangular course in a range of conditions and be willing to race on the water.
Entries have now reached capacity, and a waiting list is in operation.
IOCA South Pre-Zone Training (Bosham)
This training runs on 5 Saturdays at Bosham Sailing Club, and is ideal for sailors who are doing winter training for the first time. As a practical minimum children taking part must have their own boat and be able to comfortably sail a triangular course in a range of conditions and be willing to race on the water.
Thames Valley pre-zone training (Burghfield)
Zone Squad training – RYA
This is the first level of squad based training. The qualifying events that you need to sign up for are:
- 3rd Sep: Burghfield Open (you must sail in Main Fleet)
- 24/25th Sep: Zone Champs in Weymouth (you must sail in Main Fleet)
- 1st Oct: Training at Spinnaker
For details of the IOCA National, Intermediate and Developments squads, please visit the main IOCA website.
Club Based Training
A number of clubs run winter training that is open to non-members. Note: Hayling Island, Lymington and Parkstone are all sea-based venues. If we have another windy winter, conditions can be quite challenging. For sailors who are less confident in windy conditions, the IOCA pre-zone training at Burghfield and Spinnaker may be more suitable.
Hayling Island Sailing Club
5 Sundays and 2 weekends through winter. Caters for all levels. Sailors can sign up for individual days/weekends, and are allocated into groups on the day, based on ability. For more details, please contact Brian Staite. Training dates are also in the IOCA South calendar.
Parkstone Yacht Club
This is run with separate groups focused on specific levels:
- National/Intermediate Squad sailors (single group of 8 sailors, 7 or 8 weekends)
- Zone Squad level (double group of 16 sailors/2 coaches, 6 weekends)
- Pre-Zone squad level weekend group (double group of 14 sailors/2 coaches, 6 weekends)
- Pre-Zone squad level single day group (group of 6 sailors/1 coach, 5 Sundays)
Most of the groups run on the same weekends, to enable some vertical training. Entry is initially for the whole winter series, with the aim of creating a consistent training group. Individual days/weekends may be offered later if groups have not been filled.
Training is by application/invitation only, as this allows us to ensure that the sailors are allocated to the correct groups. If you have not received an invitation, but are interested in taking part, please contact Gillian Schonrock for more details. Training dates are also in the IOCA South calendar.
Royal Lymington Yacht Club
5 weekends during Oct-Mar. Caters for all levels from pre-zone to National Squad level. Sailors can sign up for individual weekends, and are allocated into groups on the day, based on ability. Head Coach: Tom Hayes, plus Nik Froud, Charlie Cox, Maria Claridge, Nick Rogers.
If you are running winter training that is open to non-members, and would like to be included here, please contact Gillian Schonrock.
